On 12/14/13, the Domestic Violence Committee of the New York Women’s Agenda, which I chair, supported Committee member Denise Allen for the second year at the Holiday Party her church, the Pilgrim Cathedral of Harlem, throws for the women and children from four domestic violence shelters.  This year, more than 250 people (mostly kids) braved a snow storm to attend….coming from Brooklyn and the Bronx as well as upper Manhattan.

The upstairs of the church was set up with large tables decorated with flowers and candy canes and Church members served a wonderful lunch. The whole downstairs of the Church was set up like a department store with one room filled with racks of clothes, shoes and other apparel donated by Macys and Church members.  An adjacent room (where our 16 NYWA volunteers were) was set up like a toy store where the kids could come in and pick out their presents. We also had hand lotions, cologne, lipsticks and other niceties for the mothers. It was a beautiful sight and a very special event.
